一、课程简介
《英美文化与习俗》是一门集英语国家背景知识和英语语言知识为一体的选修课,旨在向学生介绍所学语言国家的历史、社会和文化等背景知识,拓宽其知识面,帮助学生了解主要英美两国的历史、社会与文化概貌,使其从历史、文化和社会的角度更加深刻地理解和掌握所学语言知识和技能。使语言教学与文化知识紧密结合,提高学生跨文化交际能力及文化思考力。该课程的主要特色在于扩展本科学生的文化和社会视野,引导他们注意到英语语言内在的文化土壤、英语语言外在的多面性、语言和产生其语言的社会的一致性、相关性、各个英语国家的共性和个性、从包括历史渊源、政体特征、科学进步、社会发展、人文风情等等的层面,充实本科学生的知识结构,提高本科学生的认知能力和综合素质。
二、课程教学目标
本课程的目的是使学生全面了解英国与美国的国家基本情况及其文化艺术的发展,对西方思想的形成有进一步的认识,并在不断扩展自身人文知识,为学好英语扫除缺乏背景知识的障碍,提高文化素养,培养跨文化交际的意识和能力。启发学生在大学阶段的学习自主性、分析思考的能动性、和在知识积累基础上的创造性。以认识和解读英语国家文化为切入点,深化语言学习与文化学习的内涵关联,提升学习语言的实效和在真实世界中的应用能力。在提高学生文化意识的基础上,提高学生的文化观察能力、文化思索能力、文化甄别能力和文化探索能力。

主要教学方法:
本课程主要采用三种教学方法:演示法,讲授法以及讨论法。课堂上除了由老师对内容进行讲解,学生也有一定的时间对课堂内容发表个人意见, 展示他们在课后所搜集到的资料。据本课程的特点,除了采取传统的教学手段:黑板演示外,还会运用多媒体教学技术,活跃课堂气氛,协助课堂内容的清晰阐述。
四、实践性教学环节
《英美文化与习俗》内容主要是向本科学生介绍英国和美国的社会和文化各个层面,在教材为主线的前提下,大量扩充及时、客观、实用、和具有知识性的内容,在课堂上展现出一个微型的国家概貌的同时,有侧重地进行重点特写式的专题主讲、专题研讨。这样,我们任课老师首先要有在该国家生活学习的经历,还需要有大量的实物及说明性、演示性强的教学辅助物和教学辅助手段,让学生在课堂上有身临其境的感受,从而更真切地体验所学习的语言的那些国家的社会和文化层面,把各个国家进行比较式的学习和思考,同时把英语学得更灵活、更自然、更有生命力的鲜活的语言,而不是僵硬的词句、篇章的、断裂的所谓“知识”储存。教学小组成员都需要投入大量的时间和精力,收集资料,不断更新内容、归类编辑,制作更适用于理想的多媒体课堂的课件。而且,因为这些国家会有不断的变化,所以我们的收集和更新是不间断和长期的。只有这样我们的文化课才有生命力,才有时代性,才有真正的价值,有利于提高学生的全面文化素养,使他们能够真正成为二十一世纪的全方位复合型人才。

六、考核要求与方式
(一)考核要求:
英美文化与习俗考核采取形成性评估与终结性评估相结合的模式,即期末考试和平时学习表现相结合。期末考试占总分的80%,平时成绩占20%,成绩以百分制计算,其中,平时成绩包括作业、出勤、小测试。学生总评成绩不及格,按学校有关规定对所学课程补考或重修。
(二)考核方式:
英美文化与习俗课程考核位笔试,笔试为闭卷考试。
